Koyasan women pilgrimage route

Until the early Meiji Period, it was strictly forbidden for women to enter Koyasan, so that a temple where women could worship and seek lodging calledNyonindo( literally “a temple women may enter”) was built at the entrance to each of the roads.They have been well maintained all the way up to the present-day. These routes was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in July 2004, as the ‘Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountains Range.‘
