Whether you’re arriving from Osaka, Kyoto, or Kansai Airport, this comprehensive guide covers everything
you need to know about accessing Koyasan—Japan’s sacred Buddhist mountain—by rail, cable car, and bus.
Why Visit Koyasan?
Koyasan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to over 100 temples and monasteries, and the heart of
Shingon Buddhism. Nestled in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, it offers a rare
chance to experience traditional temple lodging, early morning prayers, and beautiful forested trails—
all just a few hours from Osaka.
At Koyasan Guesthouse KOKUU, we welcome travelers from around the world, and one of
the most common questions we hear is: \”How do I get to Koyasan by train?\”
This guide will walk you through the most convenient, scenic, and cost-effective ways to reach us.
Best Way to Get to Koyasan: Nankai Railway Route
The easiest and most recommended route is via Nankai Electric Railway, which offers a smooth, integrated connection all the way to Koyasan.
Step-by-Step: From Osaka to Koyasan
- Take the Nankai Koya Line from Namba or Shin-Imamiya Station to Gokurakubashi Station.
- Transfer to the Koyasan Cable Car at Gokurakubashi Station. This steep 5-minute ride offers breathtaking views as you ascend the mountain.
- Board the local Nankai Rinkan Bus from Koyasan Station to your final destination in the town center.
✅ IC cards (like Suica, ICOCA, and Pasmo) are accepted on the buses. The entire journey is seamless and signage is available in English.
Train Options: Express vs. Limited Express Koya
- Limited Express \”Koya\” Train
- Reserved seating, comfortable, and faster

- Regular Express or Rapid Trains
- Cheaper and more frequent
- No seat reservation needed
- May require a transfer at Hashimoto Station
🎟️ Tickets are available at station machines or counters. Note: IC cards and VISA Touch can be used for base fares but not for reserved seats.

- Transfer to the Nankai Koya Line bound for Gokurakubashi
⚠️ Tip: Trains from Tengachaya can be crowded. For a guaranteed seat:
- Travel via Namba Station and board from there
- Or take the Limited Express Koya
🕒 Total travel time: approx. 2.5 hours
Why We Don’t Recommend the JR Route
- Koyasan is not directly accessible via JR
- You must transfer to Nankai Line at Hashimoto Station, paying extra
- Travel time is longer and less convenient
✅ For comfort and simplicity, the Nankai route is the best option.
From Kyoto to Koyasan
There are two main options:
- Via Osaka (Namba)
- Take JR or Hankyu to Namba Station
- Transfer to the Nankai Koya Line
- Direct Bus from Kyoto to Koyasan
- Operates seasonally
